One of the most powerful states in Mexico is under alert after a string of girls between the ages of 12 and 27 were kidnapped. Even one appeared lifeless while she continues the search for the others. The officials, who had new groups to track them, rejected the version that speaks of a gang involved. Feminist groups rose up in the face of the passivity of the Government and demand justice.
Weeks of fear are lived in the Mexican state of Nuevo León, one of the most opulent in the country, after 15 women disappeared and one was found dead in the Monterrey metropolitan area. However, there is no common pattern between them and the age range varies from 12 to 26 years.
This sequence of kidnappings woke up feminist groups, which rose up to demand justice and for the State to take a more active role in clarifying the whereabouts of the victims.
In this scenario, the state government decreed last Wednesday that “urgent and extraordinary actions” be carried out for the search operations of women who have not returned home in the last month.
Within the reaction of the regional administration, on April 11 they announced that they would form “a special group” to deal with the crimes. The governor, Samuel García, authorized an increase in personnel of the Search Group of the Prosecutor’s Office, which recently amounted to 200 troops.
In turn, the ‘Task Force’ was created, which is made up of various security institutions that will carry out coordinated work with the police, municipal, state, and federal agencies, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the State Search Commission.
It will also have a place in the Command and Control Center, where all the images generated by the city’s video surveillance cameras are located. However, the package of advertisements and brand new rescue groups were not reflected in effectiveness to find the missing women.
The ‘Task Force’ was deployed after the kidnapping of Debanhi Susana Escobar -18 years old- on April 9. The young woman was seen for the last time on the side of the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway (called ‘The route of death’ due to the hundred lost in 2021) after attending a party with two friends.
Previously, the Prosecutor’s Office notified that María Fernanda Contreras Ruiz was found dead in a house in the municipality of Apodaca, which sparked the anger of feminist organizations that marched through the streets to demand justice and ended up attacking the door of the Government Palace.
The Nuevo León Justice Prosecutor’s Office reported that ten women were found (most of them are minors), while the whereabouts of at least another eight who disappeared in the last month are still unknown.
The official version rejects the idea of a wave of kidnappings
The Secretary of State Security, Aldo Fasci, made controversial statements that were repudiated by feminist groups. The official stated that in reality the ten girls found had run away from their homes due to family problems and the complaints were due to lack of communication with their parents.
While he minimized the version that “a gang dedicated to kidnapping women” is around and added that it is a problem that reaches men who also disappear.
In response to his remarks, feminist groups harshly criticized Fasci and called for his resignation as Security Secretary.
The number of missing women is rising rapidly in Mexico and has already reached 55. In addition, the average shows that seven disappear every day, while 11 are murdered.
