Nothing to do for the election of the President of the Republic, even in the voting that began this morning at 11 at the Chamber of Deputies. Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, nominated by the entire center-right, obtained a total of 382 votes. To be elected, 505 would have been needed. The President of the Senate also suffered several ‘defections’ by her coalition comrades: the votes she was credited with on the eve of the ballot were in fact about 457. The center-left coalition completely abstained. , while 20 ballots were declared blank or void. The second most voted candidate was once again the incumbent president, Sergio Mattarella, with 46 votes. The sixth vote will take place this afternoon at 5 pm.
What made people smile, as always happens in these cases, however, were the missing votes. Among these, one that certainly will not displease motor enthusiasts. In fact, the legendary one collected a vote for the presidency of the Republic Mario Andretti, living legend of motorsport, in the Old Continent as well as in America, and Formula 1 world champion in 1978, at the wheel of Lotus. Andretti, born in Istria in 1940, is 81 years old and has dual Italian and American citizenship. The single vote for him, however, has not been formally counted, given that at least two are needed to be ‘classified’ at the end of the ballot. Certainly, among the great voters currently involved in this delicate election, there are those who have good taste in terms of pilots.
