The accident occurred at Al-Mutamadiya Preparatory School for Girls affiliated to the Kerdasa Educational Administration in Giza, south of Cairo.
And the Egyptian Ministry of Education revealed that part of the school staircase wall fell on the female students during a scramble to enter the classroom after the morning assembly, which resulted in the death of a female student, and the injury of 15 others.
A medical source told “Sky News Arabia” that the condition of the rest of the injured is stable so far.
Minister’s decision
For his part, the Minister of Education, Reda Hegazy, offered “sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of the student who died in the incident,” and ordered the provision of necessary medical care to the injured students.
And the minister decided, “to refer the director of the educational administration, the school director, and the building supervisors to the investigation, in preparation for urgent and firm legal action against all those proven responsible for the incident.”
The Minister also directed the Educational Buildings Authority to conduct a review once again of all school buildings to ensure the safety and security of buildings in schools at the level of the Republic.
The minister’s decisions after the accident included “directing all directors of educational directorates to form an engineering committee to ensure that the review is completed on the safety of all school buildings, and to provide the ministry with reports as soon as possible.”
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Egyptian Educational Professions Syndicate, Mohamed Abdullah, told “Sky News Arabia” that the accident occurred as a result of the collapse of 3 steps of the stairs, part of the staircase fence of the ground floor.
He explained that the school has a large density and that no maintenance work was carried out before the start of the school year, according to the testimonies of teachers and school staff.
The head of the Teachers Union Committee in Kerdasa, Ali Setouhi, told “Sky News Arabia” that the school that witnessed the accident operates in two shifts, the first morning shift for girls, and the second evening shift for boys, which shows the great pressure on its facilities.
For its part, the Administrative Prosecution Office in Egypt decided to open an urgent investigation into the accident to determine its circumstances.
It should be noted that about 28 million students in schools and universities started the first day of the new academic year in Egypt on Sunday.
