A severe storm hit the Spanish island of Mallorca and temporarily paralyzed the airport in the city of Palma, as take-offs and landings were suspended Tuesday afternoon, according to the “Aena” company that runs the airport and the Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, on the “X” platform.
The newspapers Diario de Mallorca and Ultima Oura, citing an airport spokeswoman, reported that several arriving planes had been diverted to other airports, including Barcelona and Ibiza.
The two newspapers added that flight operations were resumed about an hour later. Aena announced that the airport is now working intensively to restore operations to normal, but it is expected that the evening will witness delays.
Local media reported that the heavy rains not only hampered flight operations, but also caused chaos in and around the airport, while roads, parking lots, parts of the arrivals hall, the duty-free shop and other stores were partially submerged.
Rain seeped through the roofs of some stores.
Floods also hit the party beaches on the island, which are popular with tourists from northern Europe.
