Speaking to Slingo, psychologist Darren Stanton revealed subtle expressions and worrying signs to watch out for when trying to detect a lie.
look
According to Darren, liars often make eye contact, to make up for the lie by looking, in an attempt to convince you to lie.
“In general, we look in the eyes of the opposite person for only 3-5 seconds, but it is a little longer for the liar,” he explains.
blink
The psychologist goes on to say that the rate of blinking will also increase when a person lies. He notes that this can be up to two to three times per minute.
barrier
Darren explains that people who are lied to also tend to create a physical barrier between themselves and the person they are lying to.
He points out that this can happen in different ways, with some choosing to use their hands as a barrier while others choose items such as a coffee mug.
escape
Liars commonly use a strategy known as language deviation, according to Darren.
He explains that this is particularly common among politicians and points to people who deliberately avoid the question being asked, instead saying they tend to respond with an answer to a completely different question.
the sound
Darren goes on to highlight the importance of being mindful of how something is said and warns that change may indicate that someone is cheating.
“You’ll notice that their tone of voice tends to get higher, which is a telltale sign that they’re nervous about telling a lie,” he explains.
Repetition
The psychologist says that a major sign of a liar is that he repeats the question he is asked in the answer.
He explains that people do this because it gives them more time to come up with an answer.
For example, when you ask someone if they cheated on you, the innocent person will reply in their own language: ‘Don’t be silly, of course not.’
He continued: “While the guilty person has little time and often his goal is to repeat what I said, ‘No, I did not deceive you’, as he did not have time to build his own answer, he repeats and uses the phrase that was in the question.”
face color
Darren notes that a change in color in someone’s face can also be a sign that the person is lying.
He explains that emotional changes are related to stress, so when someone feels stressed, blood may be drawn away from their face, causing them to look pale.
