A policeman died on Sunday after being repeatedly stabbed during an attack on a far-right rally in Germany.
A man carrying a knife attacked several people and injured them on Friday in the market square in the city of Mannheim in southwestern Germany.
Five people were injured in the attack, who were participating in a march organized by the “Pax Europe” group.
The local police said in a statement that the 29-year-old policeman “was stabbed several times in the head area” while trying to intervene.
She explained that immediately after the attack, the policeman underwent “urgent surgery and was placed in an artificial coma,” but he “died of his wounds” today, Sunday.
For his part, Chancellor Olaf Schulz expressed his “deep sadness” over the killing of the policeman in the wake of the “horrific attack.”
He added, via the X platform, “His commitment to the safety of all of us deserves the highest appreciation.”
In turn, Finance Minister Christian Lindner told the German newspaper Bild that the policeman’s death “deeply affected me and makes me angry about what is happening in our country.”
On Friday, Interior Minister Nancy Viser announced the opening of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the attack.
