A court in southeastern Algeria has sentenced a member of parliament to three years in prison after he tried to help his daughter cheat in the intermediate education certificate exams at the beginning of the month, APS reported on Tuesday.
According to the source, the trial took place yesterday, Monday, and the verdict was issued in the evening of the same day by the Valley Court (650 km southeast of Algiers) in the state of Al-Mughayyir, with three years in prison and a fine of 10 million dinars (about 65 thousand euros) against four defendants, including Deputy Abdel Nasser Arjun who was imprisoned.
The prosecution had requested seven years in prison for the deputy on charges of “attempting to leak the subjects and answers of the intermediate education certificate exam”, “abusing the position” and “inciting employees to abuse influence”.
This is related to the deputy’s attempt to send a paper containing the answer to his daughter’s mathematics exam in the intermediate education certificate exams that took place between June 6 and 8, and success in it is necessary to enroll in secondary education.
The deputy commissioned the national gendarmerie commander in charge of securing protection at the examination center to deliver the answer sheet to his daughter, but the professor responsible for supervising the exams noticed this and filed a complaint against the deputy and the gendarmerie.
According to the Algerian constitution, an MP enjoys immunity only in actions related to his parliamentary activity. Immunity is automatically forfeited in case of flagrante delicto.
Since 2020, the government has tightened penalties for cheating in the intermediate education certificate and baccalaureate (high school) exams, up to three years in prison. The penalty may be up to 15 years in case of causing the exam to be canceled and repeated.
A teacher in Biskra state (southeast) was previously imprisoned after publishing natural sciences questions on her phone. The Chlef Court (Western) also sentenced a girl to 18 months in prison for helping a student cheat in the French language.
Last week, the baccalaureate exams also witnessed attempts to cheat or leak questions on social media.
Candidates were arrested in Tipaza, west of the Algerian capital, and in El-Wadi and Setif (east), including prison sentences for one year and financial fines, the media reported.
In addition to the severe penalties, the authorities cut off the Internet at the time of the baccalaureate exams, especially since 2016, which witnessed widespread cases of cheating on social media.
