kyiv claims that two Russian cruise missiles have entered Romanian airspace, but the Moldovan government has only confirmed the presence of a device
Ukraine has woken up to a new wave of explosive missiles and drones from Russia. Explosions have been heard in kyiv, Dnipro and other southern cities. The massive attack unleashed this morning was just one day after the visit of President VolodÃmir Zelenski to the headquarters of the European Union, where he asked the Twenty-seven for more weapons. The request has been for more long-range missiles and fighter jets, the arsenal that the Kremlin does possess in large numbers and that today it has displayed in the worst light. For the moment the Ukrainian authorities have not reported any victims.
The bombardments have been against electrical stations, which have become a target of Russian attacks since the middle of the previous year. Depriving access to basic services is a way to “punish the Ukrainian population and forces,” according to the Kremlin. Despite the efforts of the authorities to repair the damage at full speed, the bombings have left thousands of people without electricity and heating in the dead of winter, in addition to affecting the Army, which also needs the operation of energy facilities.
The Ukrainian Air Force has denounced that the missiles have been launched from the Russian Black Sea fleet and have fallen in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhia provinces. A part of the southeast is without power. The secretary of the municipal council, Anatoly Kurtev, has indicated that “in one hour there were 17 attacks in the city of Zaporizhia, the highest number since the beginning of the Russian invasion” almost a year ago.
According to the Air Force, the Kremlin has launched six Kalibr cruise missiles, “up to 35 S-300 guided missiles” and seven Iranian-made Shahid drones. “The enemy attacked cities and basic infrastructure in Ukraine,” he said in a statement.
Ukraine also anticipates that two Russian cruise missiles have entered the airspace of Romania, a NATO member country. The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeri Zaluzhni, explained on Telegram that two Kalibr missiles crossed the territory of Moldova and, later, Romania, before entering Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense of Moldova has confirmed the irruption of at least one missile in its airspace. The Government has condemned what it considers a violation of its sovereignty and has stressed that it is closely monitoring the situation.
