The faithless association of Cristo de la Providencia and María Santísima de la Púplica will premiere on the Saturday before Dolores Friday
“A project created by devotion and in the midst of a pandemic.” This is how Carmelo Tornero, a doctor from Abarán who has been working as a rheumatologist at the Morales Meseguer Hospital in Murcia, defines the initiative that he has promoted together with six colleagues. This is the creation of the Eucharistic Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Providence and Holy Mary of Supplication, which will go out for the first time in procession through the streets of the city center on the Saturday before Dolores Friday, the date that the year comes will coincide with March 25. “It is a period of penance, of preparation for Holy Week and, above all, for the peak day of Christianity, Easter Sunday,” explains Tornero.
The brotherhood is named after two images from the Las Claras convent: Cristo de la Providencia and María Santísima de la Púplica, both sculptures by Francisco Sánchez Araciel. «I have had a relationship with the Poor Clare nuns for years because I am going to altruistically provide them with medical care when they need me. On one of those visits I saw Christ and La Dolorosa and I thought how I could make these images known and that they would be the object of worship and devotion by the rest of Murcia. Everything has been born of providence, ”says Tornero, who will hold the position of president of the brotherhood.
“We hope that when the carvings parade through the streets they impact the hearts of Murcians”
Together with him, the founders of this new brotherhood are, to date, Juan Manuel Hernández (vice president), Andrés Nicolás (artistic director), Vicente Nicolás (director of protocol and good manners), Juan José Hurtado (secretary), Joaquín Lorca (treasurer) and José Antonio Ibáñez (chair). And they are only today because all the brothers who join the project -which will be presented to society on October 8 at the convent of Las Claras- will have the status of founders until they process for the first time.
«We only need the brothers. We already have the thrones and the clothing and I hope that many people join this new project. We do not want to take the limelight away from anyone, the only thing we want is to enrich the city with a procession that will leave just when Lent ends. We hope that when the images parade through the streets they impact the hearts of Murcians and those who visit us, “said the president. Regarding the invocation of the new brotherhood, he explained that «the Eucharist will be the core of our brotherhood activity. An essential path to strengthen faith.
