The prime minister, the president of the Senate, the former leader of the Government Matteo Renzi, the former mayor of Milan and European parliamentarian Letizia Moratti… More and more names are added to the list of Italian personalities who are victims of a spy network over the Internet which allegedly has the support of high public officials, the mafia and even secret services of foreign countries.
This Sunday, the Milan Prosecutor’s Office revealed more information about this plot and ordered the arrest of several suspects: “subjects who enjoy high-level support, in various environments, including that of the mafia and that of the secret serviceseven foreigners”, and who often boast of being able to intervene in investigations and trials to block judicial initiatives.
Investigations have shown that the criminal network – in which “the group moves via Pattari” (headquarters of the Equalize company, in Milan) – is “very extensive” and is structured “in a network.” «Each member of the association group and each external collaborator has, in turn, other contacts, in the Police and in other public administrations, through which they can illicitly obtain confidential and sensitive data and information», said the prosecutor.
Some 60 suspects are being investigated, of which six have been arrestedaccording to the Milanese Prosecutor’s Office, which has concluded that the group of hackers managed to access thousands of confidential documents and communications, including banking or tax information.
One of the detainees, considered the most responsible for the plot, is a former police officer, Carmine Gallowho had access to individual profiles with personal data of the victims.
The group even had itineraries and location data of espionage victims thanks to mobile phones and credit card purchases. The network had even gained access to the central police base, among others, to 800,000 background files. Likewise, they had obtained health and financial information about their victims.
Those affected
Among those spied on is Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Specifically, the hackers obtained the movements of his bank account, possibly thanks to the collaboration of a worker from the Intesa Sanpaolo entity who, supposedly, has already been fired. His sister, Arianna, and his former partner, Andrea Giambruno, have also been spied on.
Two of the detainees boasted of having managed to hack an email address assigned to the Italian president, Sergio Mattarellaaccording to the Prosecutor’s Office document that requests the arrest warrants.
