The right to breastfeed your child whenever and wherever you want. This has been denounced Sandra Zamorano Cantavella in social networks. The woman, mother of two children and a resident of Barcelona, has reported that she was expelled from an area of the Montcada municipal swimming pool for breastfeeding her six-month-old baby on the curb. According to the narration, the receptionist asked him, out of modesty, to go to the locker room to do it. Zamorano says the company has apologized to him, claiming that breastfeeding is not prohibited at its facilities. The altercation occurred on July 12, but her message published on Facebook that relates the events has gone viral with hundreds of. I like it and comments, and has been denounced in different television programs.
“I want to share with you an unfortunate incident that happened to me today inside the facility Montcada Aqua (municipal gym of my population) ”, begins this mother in the social network. According to her, it was the second time that she went to the compound with her baby Nil. Suddenly, the little boy began to complain of hunger, and she decided to sit on the curb of the pool and feed him. “No one was looking at me until the receptionist arrived,” he continues. It was then when the worker invited her to go to the locker room to continue breastfeeding her little one. According to this mother, the employee compared breastfeeding with other activities that cannot be done on the premises, “as it is also not allowed for children to walk around here, this is the same thing.” The woman, who admits that at first she did not know reacting, he listened to the receptionist, but then decided to put a complaint sheet and leave the premises.
“While making the claim, I asked him if anyone had complained to him and said no. Please, I ask you to share this publication, not for me, but for all nursing mothers who have ever felt discriminated against and have asked them to cover up or hide, “encourages the woman on Facebook. “(…) The problem is not the person who breastfeeds, but the one who looks and sees it as something obscene and not as something natural and precious … In the 26 months I breastfed Jan ( my first son), I have never experienced a situation like this, and the truth is that it is not pleasant. I cannot explain in words how I have felt; nor the knot that I have in my stomach and the anger, grief and amount of emotions that I feel and that unfortunately are not good at all … I said, share and empower yourselves, nursing mothers, because our breasts are the sustenance of our little ones ” .
After the complaint, the company issued a statement alleging that breastfeeding on the premises is not prohibited: “We publicly apologize to a mother for the misunderstanding of a worker, who also respects and defends breastfeeding, with the interpretation of current safety and hygiene regulations (for risks and prevention of covid-19) within the facilities. And they add: “At no time was it intended to prohibit or prevent women from breastfeeding. We ask that the lynching suffered by this worker on social networks be stopped. She regrets the incident and is concerned about the situation caused. “
Zamorano explained this Thursday to EL PAÍS that he decided to denounce, both with a complaint form and on networks, “because it seems incredible to me that in the 21st century there are still people who can see something unethical in breastfeeding and they do not have the problem is the mother who breastfeeds but the one who looks and sees something obscene that can be hidden … “. The woman was surprised with the reception: “With this case I have exposed myself to all kinds of opinions, but luckily most have been in favor.”
“I never thought that it could go viral on the Internet, much less that I have been contacted by so many media outlets to make the case known. And I have decided to do the interviews because I believe that as a mother, a woman and a daughter it is my duty to make society aware of something so beautiful and natural, “continues Zamorano. “I would tell moms not to shut up in a situation like this, to take the necessary steps because they are not fighting only for them, but for the rights of all,” she adds. For her, breastfeeding in public is something that has to go penetrating society “because it seems that sometimes we go back in time.” And this type of situation can greatly influence those parents who do not decide to breastfeed, although both breastfeeding and bottle feeding are two totally options valid and respectable ”, he concludes emphatically.
Is it legal to breastfeed in public in Spain?
In Spain, the equality law protects mothers who want to breastfeed their children in public. In this sense, there are autonomous communities that have gone one step further to defend this practice. For example, breastfeeding in public places has been a recognized right in the Basque health system since 2015; The Valencian Courts approved in 2016 a non-law proposal that recognizes the right to breastfeed in any public space, and the Pamplona City Council declared in 2017 all the municipal offices, libraries, schools, cultural centers, parks, gardens and streets as “breastfeeding spaces”.
Breastfeeding has many benefits: for this reason, World Health Organization recommends giving it exclusively during the first six months of babies’ life and up to two years of age as complementary feeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics He agrees in affirming that it is not a matter of family lifestyle, but a matter of public health that all of society must protect. And this, obviously, includes that any mother can breastfeed her baby wherever she wants with the peace of mind of being protected by the law, so that they can defend themselves against criticism, threat or insult. Breastfeeding in the United States has been legal in all 50 States plus the District of Columbia since August 2018.
