Microsoft reported a bugs in Word which can lead to accidental deletion of documents while saving. The issue appears to be related to the file name and affects users who save documents locally on their computer. Specifically, if a file has an uppercase extension (for example, .DOCX instead of .docx) or contains the “#” symbol in the name, attempting to save the document upon closing may cause it to be deleted by Windows.
The bug has been confirmed by several sources, including the Neowin site, and appears to affect all users using Office version 2409. Fortunately, deleted documents can be recovered from the Windows Recycle Bin, but Microsoft recommends taking some precautions to avoid losing your work.
Temporary solutions suggested by Microsoft include manually saving the file before closing the document or Word, enabling the “Do not show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts” option in Word settings, and checking and changing Word file extensions to uppercase.
Importantly, the bug does not affect files saved in the cloud, but only those stored locally. Microsoft has assured that the Office team is working to resolve the issue, but in the meantime, users are advised to follow the temporary solutions and use caution when saving documents.
