The United States Capitol Police arrested this Tuesday, election day in the country, a man in the Congressional facilities who “smelled of fuel” and was carrying a torch and a flare gun.
According to a statement from the Capitol Police, the individual was arrested when he was passing through the security checkpoints of the Capitol visitor center, through which tourists who come to the Legislative facilities pass.
“Our agents have just arrested a man who was detained during our registration process at the Capitol Visitor Center. The man smelled of gasoline, had a torch and a flare gun,” he reported in a brief message.
As a result of the arrest and to facilitate the investigation, the Capitol will not offer guided tours to the public today.
The United States holds elections this Tuesday between the Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris and the former Republican president Donald Trump (2017-2021). Americans also vote to elect the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate, in addition to other local races.
The day has largely proceeded normally, although there have been isolated incidents, such as false bomb threats that, according to the FBI, come from Russian email domains.
