The attacker, who has been arrested, set fire to one of the wagons of the convoy
At least 17 people have been injured in a knife attack perpetrated by an individual on a train car in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, which he has later set fire to, police sources have reported to the official Japanese news agency Kyodo. The attacker has stabbed one of the passengers, a 70-year-old man who is hospitalized with a serious prognosis after being stabbed in the chest. Then he spread a flammable liquid and set fire. Most of the injured appear to have been affected by the inhalation of toxic gases and are of a minor nature.
The event took place around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, when crowds of people headed to the center of the city to celebrate Halloween. The attack sparked a passenger panic and videos posted on social media show people rushing out of the emergency windows after the train stopped at Kokuryo station and the doors did not open immediately.
Police have later confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man identified as Kyota Hattori armed with a knife that appeared to spray gasoline across the car before setting it on fire. According to witnesses, the man wore a purple suit with a green shirt, similar to the one used by the Joker, a well-known fictional villain. The young man was detained without resisting, according to the authorities and explained that he “wanted to kill people and be a county to death.” That is why he wanted to kill two or more people. He has also confessed to having spread lighter refill liquid to start the fire.
One of the passengers reported that he saw the bloody knife and thought it was a Halloween costume. Another explained that he could see a woman “crying and shaking”. “I thought I was going to die,” he explained, as it reminded him of the sarin gas attack perpetrated on the Tokyo subway in 1995 by the Supreme Truth (Aum Shinrikyo) sect in which 14 people died and 6,000 were affected.
