A young Malian who arrived in the Canary Islands in August in a cayuco has died after going into cardiorespiratory arrest at the Alcalá de Henares reception center (Community of Madrid), for reasons that are still unknown, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the NGO Accem, in charge of the management of the center dependent on the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. The boy was 21 years old, his name was Diallo Sissoko and he had been transferred from Archipelago to Madrid on September 15. Both the NGO and the Secretary of State for Migration are awaiting the results of the autopsy.
According to the organization, the boy had gone to the reception center’s infirmary on several occasions due to chest pain and severe pain in one leg, for which he had been referred to the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital on Tuesday, October 15. From there he came out with a diagnosis of respiratory infection, but Accem assures that the hospital only prescribed painkillers. Since then, Diallo Sissoko went to the infirmary twice more. The last time, this Monday, the boy was under observation for several hours until he began to get worse, so the center staff called the ambulance, and he went into cardiorespiratory arrest.
After the first visit to the infirmary, two days later, on Thursday, October 17, the young man returned to the infirmary due to pain in his leg. “He is given crutches, the pain in his leg is evaluated and he has no heat or signs of severity,” Accem maintains. The emergency center infirmary gives him more painkillers, but he is not referred to the hospital again. “During that weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he takes his medication normally,” adds the NGO spokesperson.
This Monday the 21st, Diallo Sissoko returned early to the infirmary. That night, the young man had fallen from his bunk and insisted that it hurt, always according to the organization. “His vital signs and stability were checked, it was found that he is stable and has pain in his knee,” Accem points out, adding that due to the lack of improvement, they left him under observation throughout the day. At night, the Malian began to get worse. “When they saw that his vital signs were worsening – with symptoms of hypotension – they called the emergency room, which brought the ambulance,” added sources from the NGO. The Malian went into respiratory arrest while he was still in the reception center, from where he was transferred to the Hospital. “Hours later they informed us that an attempt was made to resuscitate him without success,” according to the organization. Accem has contacted the family to break the news.
From the Sumar parliamentary group they have asked the Government for explanations. Deputy Tesh Sidi has registered several questions in the Congress of Deputies to request information about the reasons that led to the death of the young Malian resident in a center of the state reception network.
