UGT asks to review the risk of shifts
The regional head of the UGT Local Administration Sector in the Region of Murcia, José Juan González Salas, announced that his union will ask the Cartagena City Council to carry out a study on the health risks associated with shift work. «In recent years there have been at least fifteen heart attacks among the staff and there have been deaths, one of them an agent who collapsed during a procession. There are scientific studies that prove the negative impact of shifting on health and it is urgent that the municipal prevention services carry out an exhaustive analysis of the situation in which all the agents find themselves, “said González. And he added that UGT will request the same in the rest of the consistories of the Region.
Mayor Torralba recalled that one of the government team’s commitments, recently agreed with the unions, is to introduce “less demanding” shifts. He cited the so-called “African shift”, which involves chaining three eight-hour days with two eight-hour breaks in between. The same agent works from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., returns to the pit or the next day from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and performs a third service that same day, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
