Investigators have not provided further details at this stage about the alleged assailant, but according to information from various local media in Germany, it is a man who suffers from psychiatric disorders. At this stage, the investigation is in the hands of the Nuremberg prosecutor’s office and not the federal prosecutor’s office that handles terrorism cases.
Germany remains a target for jihadist groups
In recent years, Germany has faced a double terrorist threat from jihadist groups and right-wing extremists.
German authorities have been on alert for the terrorist threat since the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the largest attack in Berlin in December 2016, when a truck stormed a Christmas market and left at least 12 dead and 48 injured.
On June 25, three people died and five others were injured in a knife attack in Würzburg, southern Germany, by a Somali man suffering from psychiatric problems. Germany remains a target for jihadist groups, particularly because of its participation in the coalition.
Since 2000, the German authorities have thwarted 23 such attempted attacks, claiming that all these attacks appear to have been organized on their own, often under the influence of mental disorders.
