The authorities stated that Minister Orlando Jorge Mira was shot dead by an unknown person, while no further details were disclosed about the crime.
According to “AFP”, a gunman stormed the weekly meeting of the minister with his deputies and opened fire, according to three sources from within the ministry, who asked not to reveal their identities.
“We are disturbed by the situation,” the Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources said in a brief statement.
“We are appalled by what happened,” the environment ministry wrote on Twitter. Local media reported that an elite police unit entered the ministry in search of the shooter who had holed up inside.
Bartolome Buchhales, executive director of the government’s innovation cabinet, wrote that he regretted the killing.
“His death is a tragedy… We Dominicans must come together to achieve a charter of peace and peaceful coexistence. No more violence,” the official added.
Mira was also a lawyer and a founding member of the Modern Revolutionary Party. He was appointed Minister of Environment and Natural Resources in August 2020.
