About 650 soldiers make up the “Green Army” of the Ivory Coast, it is a unit that is dedicated to the protection of forests in the country and the awareness of communities about the importance of these ecosystems.
Every day, the “Green Army” prepares to continue its mission: to protect the forests of Côte d’Ivoire. There are 650 soldiers who are in charge of going into nature in search of people who, illegally, cut the trees of the African country.
The initiative emerged in 2018, when the country’s government created the unit to tackle deforestation, in a country that has lost 70% of its forests due to the massive production of cocoa and other agricultural activities.
The Army uses drones to detect, in the middle of the extensive forests, criminal activities, ranging from logging to the illegal extraction of cocoa and gold. In addition, the soldiers are in charge of sensitizing the community and educating it about the importance of caring for the ecosystem.
