Hope Hicks, former spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s campaign, became the first official from his inner circle to testify in the criminal trial of the former president on Friday.
“I’m really nervous,” Hicks said, while Trump stared at her intently while sitting meters away from her.
Hicks was deep in the final stages of Trump’s successful campaign for the White House when allegations surfaced that he paid money to buy a woman’s silence.
Trump was accused of falsifying his business records to compensate his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for $130,000 paid days before the 2016 presidential election in which he ran against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
This trial is the first of its kind for a former American president, as Trump seeks to regain the presidency from Joe Biden in next November’s elections.
Hicks told the court today that she reported directly to Trump in the job structure during her work in the 2016 campaign, describing him as “very committed.”
Earlier this week, prosecutors urged Judge Juan Mercand to fine Trump for additional violations of a silence order imposed on him to protect trial participants.
