One of the objectives in our daily diet is that we manage to incorporate all the types of necessary nutrients in the right amount. This is achieved by carrying out a varied and healthy diet in which fruits and vegetables abound, without forgetting lean meats, fish, healthy fats, seeds and legumes, quality carbohydrates or fiber, among others.
Among the healthy ingredients that we can incorporate quite frequently into our diet we find the egg which, normally, we eat as chicken.
According to the Egg Studies Institutethis is one of the most complete foods since it has a large amount of nutrients, few calories and a healthy fat composition. «It has the best quality proteinsthat is, those that most resemble those that our body needs. Its high proportion of essential amino acids is important, which we cannot manufacture and therefore must obtain from food. In addition, it contains almost all vitamins (except C) and minerals of great interest (iron, phosphorus, selenium),” indicates the aforementioned source.
But, although few, when consuming eggs we are exposed to risks, most of them related to how we cook and handle them. Regarding this, the food engineer Mariana Zapién has resolved the question of whether we should wash eggs before consuming them or not.
Through her social networks, the expert explains in detail that cleaning this food or not depends on when we are going to consume it: «Eggs are not washed if you plan to store them because they are at greater risk of contamination and their useful life is greatly reduced.!!! Just wash them before consuming them,” he says in the text that accompanies the video where he gives more specific instructions.
The expert details that the eggs have a membrane or protein cuticle that protects naturally against pathogenic microorganisms that may be in the shell and filter into the egg, something that can happen if we clean it:
«If you wash the egg you destroy that protective cuticle and you will have to put them in the refrigerator to avoid the growth of pathogenic microorganisms that can enter the egg. You should also consume them as soon as possible because their useful life will no longer be long, so it is not recommended to wash them if you are not going to consume them right away. In the event that we notice feces on the shell, the engineer recommends the following: «Ideally, use a dry cloth. to clean these remains and continue storing them at room temperature.
Furthermore, it indicates that, whether we clean the eggs or not, what we should wash are our hands after handling this food, as well as cooking it thoroughly to reduce the risk of “contracting any foodborne illness.”
