Carlos HO, a Madrid native known as Lama Losel, has accepted a six-month prison sentence and pay 20,000 euros to two of his former followers for having manipulated them into doing “all kinds of actions at his whim,” such as delivering a “ tithe” to buy food or goals, to make them believe that they had to remove a microchip that aliens had implanted in their bodies. In the sentence, to which EL PAÍS has had access, it is considered proven that he posed as a lama and that from his Sendero del Viento association, based in Sigüenza (4,300 inhabitants, Guadalajara), he used “personality control techniques.” ”, “coercively” against the two injured parties. The agreement, signed on May 27, contemplates that he does not go to prison if he does not commit a crime within two years and compensates those harmed with 20,000 euros.
Carlos Bardavío, the lawyer who has represented the victims, and the Network for the Prevention of Sectarianism and the Abuse of Weakness (Redune) have celebrated this ruling as a triumph that will establish jurisprudence for other cases. The false lama Losel has been convicted of illicit association and article 515.2 of the Penal Code has been applied to him, something for which there is no precedent and which recognizes that there has been an “alteration or control of the personality” of the victims to achieve the purposes that the false lama Losel intended.
The two followers denounced Carlos HO in 2017 for the crime of fraud, injuries and illicit association. The trial was held seven years later, in the Criminal Court 1 of Guadalajara. The prosecutor requested free acquittal, but the victims’ lawyer, who was prosecuting the private prosecution, maintained that a crime of illicit association had been committed and demanded six months in prison and compensation of 20,000 euros for the injured parties. Judge Gema Martínez Mora handed down the sentence after reaching an agreement.
In April 2010, Carlos HO explained in an interview on the Paralelo 43 channel that he was a plumber, but that, after suffering a stroke, he had become a lama and had achieved the highest international qualifications. According to some of those affected, for 20 years he has been teaching classes on spirituality and performing Tibetan bowl concerts and shamanic singing, as well as healing therapies with bowls, exorcisms or prayers for liberation.
The profile of victims of sects or spiritual organizations is usually that of people with uncertainty, who seek personal well-being, an immediate professional outlet, or who suffer from an illness. According to the estimates of Luis Santamaría, theologian and expert from the Ibero-American network that studies the advance of these phenomena, there are 400,000 followers of various types of spiritual communities.
