The unmanned aircraft service, launched in 2019, carried out a total of 34 actions in 2021
The Autonomous Community acquired a new drone, with an investment of 7,000 euros, to reinforce the endowment of the specialized fauna and flora monitoring units of environmental agents, according to sources from the Autonomous Administration in a statement.
From the regional Executive, it is planned that drones can help in surveillance and control tasks throughout the territorial extension of the work demarcations of environmental agents in the Region of Murcia, for which the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment plans the training and certification of agents distributed throughout all the work demarcations in which they are organized.
This was announced by the general director of the Natural Environment, Fulgencio Perona, during the delivery ceremony of the device at the headquarters of the Forestry Coordination Center, located in El Valle, who explained that the acquired drone “has special characteristics that allow topographic surveys to be carried out with centimeter detail, so that environmental officers will be able to perform detailed, automated inspections in complex environments such as quarries and logging.”
In 2019 the Ministry, through the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, launched a Drone Unit in the Body of Environmental Agents, Perona confirmed that “three years later we can confirm that this technology has been incorporated into work related to monitoring of fauna and flora, support for the surveillance of areas of difficult access, detection of environmental infractions, or prevention of forest fires, among others, which has meant a total of 34 actions in the year 2021 ».
Likewise, it has been used in support tasks during the work carried out in the control of hunting reserves, but it has been particularly important to be able to add the ability to monitor nesting areas to environmental agents to confirm the success or failure of spawning. , reducing the number of accesses by personnel specialized in work at height and reducing the risk of accidents.
“In short, the observation of the territory and fauna through unmanned aircraft has allowed the different units that make up the body to strengthen the management of the regional environment,” said the director.
The Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade has also been reinforced in the performance of its tasks with the acquisition of a laptop, with an investment of 1,300 euros, which allows them to collect data in the field and streamline their actions before legal bodies of the Ministry and the Environment Prosecutor’s Office itself in the case of crimes.
