The lawyers representing his daughter speak of “an accumulation of indications” that suggest that his death was “favored” by his ex-wife and his doctor, while doubting the role of the current government of the African country
The Barcelona guard court ordered this Saturday to carry out an autopsy on former Angolan president Eduardo dos Santos, who died on Friday at the Teknon clinic, due to suspicions that it was a homicide. The lawyers representing his daughter, Tchizé dos Santos, pointed out that they see “a host of indications that the death” of her father “was favored” allegedly by his ex-wife, his personal doctor and people close to him. current Angolan Government.
The law firms Carmen Varela Family Lawyers and Molins Criminal Defense represent Tchizé dos Santos, who last Monday reported an alleged attempted murder to the Mossos d’Esquadra. Already on Friday, after his death, he asked not to hand over his father’s body until the autopsy was done for “fear” that he would be transferred to Angola.
The aforementioned lawyers affirmed that the current president of the country, Joao Lourenço, intends to give a funeral with honors to Dos Santos to “appear and simulate a rapprochement and unity with the former president of Angola” ahead of the elections scheduled for next month. of August.
However, they explained that Dos Santos wanted to be buried in Spain and refused a state funeral in Angola. There, the Dos Santos family “has been suffering strong political persecution ideologically led by the new Government of Angola and President Lourenço.
For this reason, both law firms criticized in a note sent to the media that “the Angolan minister Téte António has traveled to Barcelona to ensure that the body of Dos Santos is transferred to Angola after his death” despite the wish of the former president and his children. .
Visit from your ex
They also said that Eduardo dos Santos and his ex-wife separated in 2017 after he left the presidency and when he moved to Barcelona, although “they had not had a relationship for years.” They added that since then she has made public appearances as the first lady of the now president, Lourenço. Regarding the ex-wife, the legal representatives of Tchizé dos Santos explained that the woman visited the ex-president in Barcelona last April, after five years.
The lawyers reported that since then she settled in his residence and the former president was “isolated” from his children. She was also restricted from the muscular and respiratory physiotherapy treatment that she received, canceling visits with her Spanish medical team. Her health – they add – “was seriously worsening, so that her physical abilities were increasingly affected” until she was admitted to an intensive care unit at the Teknon clinic.
In his opinion, the link between Dos Santos’ ex-partner and the current president of Angola, Lourenço, is “uncontroversial”. According to the two law firms, in Angolan political circles the presence of women is interpreted as a way to limit possible political and media damage to Lourenço due to the death of Dos Santos during the electoral period.
The doctor, “senior Army officer”
Last March Dos Santos returned from a trip to Angola — he left in September after living in Barcelona for two years — “in a state of extreme health,” weighing only 45 kilos, said the lawyers, who criticized that he was not accompanied by his personal doctor, also of Angolan nationality.
One of the eight children of Dos Santos, Tchizé, filed a complaint this week with the Mossos d’Esquadra for an alleged attempted murder against the former president and now the Barcelona Investigating Court 11 is in charge of the case. This criminal complaint points to Dos Santos’s personal doctor who, according to the lawyers, “is a senior position in the Angolan Army and is paid by the current Government of Angola.”
In parallel, Tchizé dos Santos had filed a lawsuit requesting measures of protection and personal and economic support for his father before his death. This cause is in charge of the Court of First Instance 59 of Barcelona and is processed by civil means.
The statement from the two firms adds that there have been repeated visits “outside the family and unauthorized” by her to Dos Santos while he was admitted, in an unconscious state, to the Teknon clinic. They also criticized the fact that the Angolan government has reported on the state of health and the death of Dos Santos on its social networks despite the fact that the family “has expressly and publicly requested privacy and confidentiality on this issue.”
