A Catalan hiker dies in Georgia after being dragged by an avalanche

A 53 -year -old Tarragona woman has died on Wednesday for an avalanche when she practiced mountain skiing with five other people, who have been unharmed, in Ushguli (Georgia). As reported to Efe a spokesman for the Federation of Excitist Entities of Catalonia, to which several of the members of the expedition belonged, the avalanche has caught three of the mountaineers, two of whom have come unharmed from the accident.

The expedition was made up of six mountaineers from different Catalan locations, which had contacted through common friends or acquaintances to travel to Ushguli to practice mountain skiing, so they formed a heterogeneous group of diverse ages, according to the same sources. The snow avalanche has fallen on the six hikers when they descended, one by one and separated by a security distance, on the slope of the Ushguli mountain, one of the most altitude settlements of the Georgian Caucasus.

Ushguli has recently become a popular destination among mountain ski fans, despite the risks involved in mountaineering in the Caucasus, a very steep and steep area that makes it lead to the avalanches, as explained to Efe Xavi Llongueras, high mountain guide and that has directed several expeditions in the area.

“The Caucasus must have a lot of respect,” says Llongueras, who remembers that they are mountains that usually accumulate large amounts of snow, which triggers the danger of avalanches.

Foreign Ministry sources have indicated that the diplomatic representation of Spain in Georgia is making the appropriate efforts with local authorities in order to provide all the consular assistance necessary to those affected. For his part, the Government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, has published a message on his X account in which he says he is following “carefully” the accident caused by the avalanche in Georgia that has affected the expedition of Catalan climbers.

Precisely, on March 11, a Catalan mountaineer died in the highest mountain in Armenia, the Aragots, for an avalanche that affected eight other people, three of them firefighters of the Generalitat.
