The vehicle crashed into a shop window in a shopping area in the west of the German capital. One person died and at least 8 others were injured. The driver of the car was arrested and it is still unclear whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
This Wednesday, a car ran over a crowd of passers-by and crashed into the window of a store on a busy shopping street in the Charlottenburg district, in central west Berlin. One person died in the incident and it is estimated that between 8 and 30 more were injured. According to police reports from the German capital, at least five people suffer from life-threatening injuries.
A spokeswoman for the authorities said the driver, who was driving a small gray Renault car, was arrested at the scene. Investigators are looking into whether the incident was a seizure or an accident, with a possible medical cause.
“It is believed that a man ran into a group of people. It is not yet known if this was an accident or a deliberate act,” police said.
Numerous police, firefighters and ambulances were deployed to the scene of the incident, near the Gedaechtniskirche church, one of the best-known monuments in the western part of the German capital. Rescuers carried people on stretchers to an ambulance.
“Right now we are at the scene with about 130 emergency personnel,” the police added.
The incident took place near Breitscheidplatz, the central square where on December 19, 2016, a man with Islamist ties hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then deliberately crashed it into a popular Christmas market, killing 13 other people and wounding dozens.
