You know the expression: 'Like the calf, the neighbor's cat, the pigeon from Amsterdam and three visitors to the petting zoo, the well is filled in'. According to the NOS Six cars have already gone off the bend at a bend on the A20 this year, an average of one per week. And only now is Rijkswaterstaat taking measures, but we bet that they will have little effect.
This concerns the connecting road of the A20 from Rotterdam to the A4. It is not fair to say that Rijkswaterstaat has done nothing. They previously measured the roughness of the asphalt and found it to be in order, and there was also nothing wrong with the so-called road image. This is how users see the course of the road, for example. The cause is still unknown.
The measures that Rijkswaterstaat is taking to prevent further accidents? They put up extra signs with the recommended speed. These signs are already on the right of the road, but they will now also be on the left of the road. The recommended speed before the bend is 80 km/h and 70 km/h in the bend. We are very curious whether there will be another car in the guardrail next week.
By the way, we understand that Rijkswaterstaat cannot suddenly close the highway to change the course of the bend or to resurface everything. In a situation like this, where the highway has to remain open, there is probably no suitable solution to be found in the short term. If you are driving on the A20 towards the A4, at least hold back for a moment.
Is it just because of small cars?
What strikes us about the photos of the accidents is that they are all small cars such as a Toyota Aygo or a Peugeot 108 (not shown). Cars with a short wheelbase are often more unstable. If we were to hazard a guess, they went off the gas (or even braked) in the middle of the corner – perhaps to reduce the speed from 80 to 70.
