According to the British “Sky News” network, Leon Dawson went to the Ukrainian embassy and wanted to register himself in a corps designated by Kyiv for foreign fighters, but his request was rejected due to his lack of military experience.
The volunteer confirmed that he is still ready to engage in the fighting inside Ukraine, if asked to do so, expressing his willingness to “sacrific his life.”
“We have neither the time nor the resources to train you,” a Ukrainian embassy official in London told the British man.
The young volunteer commented on this refusal by saying: “I am not stupid, and I know that I lack military experience, but I volunteered to help with anything else, because war does not stop at shooting.”
But the British volunteer later admitted that he did not really want to get stuck in Ukraine because he did not speak the local language, nor did he have any currency from the country, saying: “I don’t have anyone who can help me there.”
The man is one of several volunteers who have spoken to the press outside the Ukrainian embassy in London over the past week.
Dawson, 37, who runs an exercise club in Surrey, said he then traveled to the Polish border with Ukraine in a transport vehicle, which was packed with aid for people fleeing the war.
The British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she supports the country’s citizens who choose to fight against the Russian army, which began military operations in Ukraine on the twenty-fourth of February.
On the other hand, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace expressed a different view, urging Britons not to travel to Ukraine so as not to put their lives at risk.
Britain’s defense minister warned his citizens of the “very dangerous” situation in Ukraine.
