Biden said in a statement that he reaffirmed the United States’ support for Ukraine, during a phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Parts of the billion dollars provided to Ukraine, according to the statement, will be allocated to support military operations in the Donbass region, knowing that the military aid includes long-range weapons and anti-ship missiles.
Biden added that the United States will also send another $225 million in humanitarian aid, to provide safe drinking water, medical supplies, food, health care, shelter, and money for families to purchase essentials.
In a statement, the US President stressed that the United States remains obligated to “support the Ukrainian people whose lives have been torn apart by this war.”
Earlier on Wednesday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called on Western countries to step up arms deliveries to Ukraine to allow it to defend its territory against Russian forces.
This came in a speech by the US Secretary of Defense at the opening of the meeting of the International Contact Group on Ukraine in Brussels, to discuss supplying Kyiv with artillery systems.
“More than 45 countries have sent security aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion, and we are working to meet Kyiv’s demands for heavy and long-range weapons,” Austin said.
He added that Washington “has done a lot for the Ukrainians,” noting that it “will strengthen its support to help the Ukrainians defend themselves.”
