A 66 year old male who remained admitted to the ICU of the Cáceres University Hospital Complex has died from West Nile virus in Extremaduraas confirmed this Saturday by the Extremadura Health Service.

It is worth remembering that, until now, they have been 27 cases detected in Extremadura of West Nile fever; and three people have died because of it, including the one who died this Saturday.

Given this situation, the management of the SES has informed the management of the eight health areas of Extremadura so that they remain in “surveillance situation” in case of any suspicion of cases with compatible clinical features, thus maintaining an “alert attitude” in the face of possible cases that will increase diagnostic capacity, although 80% of infections in humans are asymptomatic.

Recommendations

The SES advises keeping in swimming pools, ponds or ponds in good conditionand try to empty and prevent objects such as plates under pots, jugs, buckets, toys, pet dishes and tires, among others, from containing water.

Also recommends cover containers or containers with water outdoors, as well as keeping water collection gutters on roofs and patio drains clean, in addition to wearing light-colored clothing and, if possible, covering as much of the body as possible with long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes, etc.

Likewise, it is advisable to avoid the use of scented soaps, perfumes and hair sprays, as they can attract insects, and use repellents and insecticides for use by the general public, as long as they are authorized as a lotion, spray or bracelets. The SES recommends the installation of mosquito nets on doors and windows to prevent the entry of mosquitoes.
