An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 shook the Ishikawa prefecture, western Japan, this Monday, without activating the tsunami warning in an area that was hit by a stronger earthquake on January 1.
A few minutes later, at 6:40 a.m. local time (9:40 p.m. on Sunday), another earthquake of magnitude 4.8 was recorded with a very close epicenter and magnitude 4 on the Japanese scale, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency ( JMA).
Local authorities told state broadcaster NHK that at the moment no damage has been caused by the earthquakes, although they continue to gather information.
The electric company Hokuriku Electric, for its part, is reviewing the situation at the Shika nuclear power plant located in Ishikawa, whose two reactors remain deactivated.
This same prefecture was affected by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake at the beginning of the year that caused a tsunami several meters high in some parts of the Noto coast, a disaster that left 260 dead and extensive material damage, and was considered one of the worst to hit the country since the 2011 disaster in northeastern Japan.
