What is diphtheria
Diphtheria is a infectious disease caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriawhich mainly infects the throat and the upper respiratory tract, and produces a toxin that affects other organs. The main symptoms of diphtheria are: throat pain, low fever and inflamed glands in the neck. The disease is transmitted through direct physical contact or the inhalation of secretions aerosolized by coughing or sneezing of infected people.
The effectiveness of vaccines has contributed to reducing the number of cases. In 2023 in Germany an adult died from this disease, while in 2024 two died. The death of this 10 -year -old child is the first deadly case of this 2025.
The German Public Health Agency, the Robert Koch Institute, states that world cases have been reduced by more than 90% between 1980 and 2010 citing the wide introduction of vaccination against diphtheria.
The German group of vaccination experts known as Stikowhose recommendations are widely followed by doctors, says that children should receive a series of protective vaccines against bacterial disease ideally in combination with vaccines against other infections.
