Insane and offensive to suggest that the INE beg for coperachas for elections and consultations.
By suggesting that the best qualified civil institution of the Mexican State be financed with alms and affirming that the costs of the useless consultation in April (with the lure of revoking the mandate) can be equated with those of the unnecessary, misleading and unsuccessful exercise that promoted the year past to supposedly “judge” former presidents, Andrés Manuel López Obrador sows another mine in his war against the National Electoral Institute.
He accuses him of more than tripling the cost of installing boxes.
In the previous consultation, he said, “they used a budget of 502 million pesos, they installed 57,077 boxes at a cost of 8,805 pesos per box. Now they have a budget of one thousand 692 million. We are talking about three times, they are going to install the same number of boxes, and it is going to cost 30 thousand pesos each box…”.
False: that one imported less money because the infrastructure of the June 6 elections was used. The same voting booth officials were used, the leftover indelible ink was used (expires in six months); the same electoral lists were used; 32 local councils and 300 district councils did not have to be installed, nor was it spent on the search and training of 12 million citizens who were paid a total of three billion pesos.
Now, to satisfy the whim that its de facto ratification be carried out with its resources reduced to 1.7 billion pesos, the INE must not only guarantee the voting tables but also ensure that the 332 electoral councils operate, in addition to hiring, training and pay the services (legal contract of three months) of seven million Mexicans.
If in the August consultation the INE was able to exploit the inertia of the elections a couple of months ago, for the one that comes in April it has to put everything together because it is not about furnishing a house but starting from a vacant lot.
Although there are plenty of reasons why there are not the same number of polling stations as in a federal election (more than 160,000) and despite the fact that the Supreme Court of Justice ruled that the INE will not violate the Constitution and the laws by not installing more than his resources allow him, López Obrador believes that the institute can multiply the fish:
“Hopefully, and without it being taken as pressure but rather on very good terms, I ask the Council of the Electoral Institute to meet and increase the number of polling places. That they resort to mechanisms such as the support of state and local authorities, local electoral bodies, social organizations, including trade unions, business organizations, which could help so that there are enough voting booths…”.
Of course not: it was precisely so that the Federal, municipal and state governments would not get their hands dirty that the INE became a citizen.
And to prevent the fledgling democracy from deteriorating again with shady financing, it is unfortunate that the INE’s recurrence to them is encouraged as if it were a heretical mendicant order…
