Despite the escalation in the Ukraine conflict, the German government has always categorically refused arms deliveries to the war zone. That should change now.
Berlin/Kiev – The longstanding practice of pacifism comes to an end in the Ukraine conflict*: On Saturday (February 26), the German government approved the delivery of lethal weapons of war to Ukraine. The news agency AFP and several media report unanimously. Accordingly, the federal government has authorized the Netherlands to deliver 400 Panzerfausts made in Germany to Ukraine. They are to be used in the fight against Russia’s rapidly advancing soldiers*.
Ukraine conflict: German arms to Ukraine via the Netherlands
So Germany does not pass on its weapons of war directly, but via the Netherlands. In this case, the third country needed the green light from Germany for the transfer. This means a fundamental change in the previous line of the federal government on arms deliveries. So far, Chancellor Olaf Scholz* and other members of the Ampel government have always ruled out deliveries of lethal weapons to Ukraine. But in the past few hours, Russian troops have taken control of more and more areas in Ukraine*. This map illustrates where the Ukraine War is raging and this map shows the areas already conquered in the Ukraine War.
Ukraine conflict: 400 rocket-propelled grenades and 14 armored vehicles – Germany is now supplying weapons after all
According to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, the export of 14 armored vehicles with special protection was also approved for Ukraine on Saturday. The vehicles were used for personal protection, possibly also for evacuation purposes, it said. They are to be handed over to Ukrainian authorities. In addition, up to 10,000 tons of fuel are to be delivered to Ukraine via Poland, where the long-standing conflicts with Russia* have escalated dramatically in recent weeks and months. Further support services are currently being examined.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock* and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck (both Green) said: “After the shameless attack* by Russia, Ukraine must be able to defend itself. She has an inalienable right to self-defense. The Federal Government is therefore also supporting Ukraine in providing urgently needed material.”
Ukraine conflict: Russia expands military offensive – Kiev increasingly in focus
On Saturday, Russia’s ruler Vladimir Putin* announced the expansion of his military offensive: Kiev is increasingly becoming the focus of the Russian military movement*. In addition, the Kremlin accused the Ukrainian leadership of refusing peace negotiations*. The opposing side around the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj* contradicts vigorously. *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
