Ukraine’s President Volodymir Zelensky announced on Thursday (24) that the country has broken diplomatic relations with Russia after the military aggression against its territory, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“This morning has gone down in history, but this story is absolutely different for our country and for Russia. We have broken diplomatic relations with Russia,” said the head of government.
Like other former Soviet Socialist Republics, Ukraine gained independence in 1991 from the former nation, which ceased to exist in December of that year as a subject of international law.
Relations between the two neighbors deteriorated from the annexation of Crimea and because of the Kremlin’s support for the armed uprising in the Donbas region in 2014.
Zelensky also highlighted that the Ukrainian army is engaged in “hard fighting” throughout the country, from the Donbas to other regions in the east, north and south of the country.
“The enemy has suffered serious losses and will suffer even more. They came to our land,” said the president.
In addition, Zelensky assured that the state bank and the entire financial system of Ukraine have “sufficient resources” to guarantee the defense of the state and “the interests of citizens”.
Previously, the president ordered the Ukrainian military forces to cause “the greatest possible losses to the invader”, according to a statement from the country’s Land Army.
