The 160-kilometer construction will have advanced technology to control immigration and smuggling
The idea of building a wall that separates two territories crosses borders. It took place in Berlin in 1961 after the quarrels derived from World War II and starred in the electoral campaign of former President Donald Trump to further divide the United States and Mexico. This time the scene is repeated in the Dominican Republic, where work has begun to build an “intelligent wall” to isolate itself from Haiti and thus prevent the arrival of immigrants of that nationality and the smuggling of goods. This was announced this Monday by its president, Luis Abinader, who pointed out that the initiative “will benefit both countries.”
The wall will cover 160 of the 392 kilometers that separate the two territories. It will be 3.9 meters high, twenty centimeters thick and will be built with reinforced concrete and a metal structure. In addition, it will have 70 watchtowers and some 41 patrol gates. It will be “intelligent”, advanced the president, as it will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology. “An advanced biometric control system will be installed to register people at regulated crossings, which will work through mobile devices,” explained Abinader, “which will allow bilateral trade to be controlled much more efficiently.”
The project will have an investment of 31 million dollars (about 27 million euros) with an execution period of nine months. The ruler promised its construction a year ago in a speech before Congress. This Monday Abinader highlighted the “serious institutional and security crisis” that Haiti has been experiencing since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise on July 7. The power vacuum degenerated into daily deaths and kidnappings in large areas of the capital. For this reason, he reiterated that his government “strongly wishes” that Haiti manages to regain control of the territories “held by criminal gangs” and the “stability necessary to hold general elections” as soon as possible.
