The Mexican passport is essential to travel to other countries, since it is the document that proves your nationality before foreign authorities, so you need to meet certain requirements to process it.
Below we will explain what are the requirements to get your passport for the first time if you are of legal age. Remember that this document is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), so you must do the procedure before that agency.

Requirements to process the Mexican passport
All persons of legal age who process their Mexican passport for the first time must meet the following requirements:
- Official birth certificate or document proving Mexican nationality
- Official identification (INE, professional ID, military service card, etc.)

The costs of the procedure vary depending on the validity of the requested passport, which can be from 3 to 10 years. These are the passport costs for 2022 according to the SRE:
- Validity of 3 years: $1,4700 pesos.
- Validity of 6 years: $2,000 pesos.
- Validity of 10 years: $3,505 pesos.
There is also a 50% discount benefit for people over 60 years of age, people with a disability and temporary agricultural workers in Canada. In these cases the costs are reduced as follows:
- Validity of 3 years: $735 pesos.
- Validity of 6 years: $1,000 pesos.
- Validity of 10 years: $1,755 pesos.
Remember that you must pay the passport rights sheet before going to your scheduled appointment with the SRE. Don’t forget to take your payment form to the bank and present the stamped receipt to the chosen office.
On the day of your appointment, go to the office you chose at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time to avoid setbacks. Once there, inform the staff that you have an appointment so that they can direct you to the corresponding row.
