The sovereign at the moment is only suffering from a cold and “will continue to work, albeit in isolation, from Windsor Castle”
LONDON. Queen Elizabeth tested positive for Covid. At the moment the sovereign would suffer only a mild cold. In all likelihood, it was her son, Prince Charles, who contracted the virus (along with his wife Camilla) only a week ago and a few days earlier had met her mother.
In recent days, although the queen has never abandoned her institutional commitments, the Buckingham Palace medical team continued to monitor her health. Until the last exam carried out last night, Saturday 19 February, which she revealed her positivity to Covid. For the moment – fortunately – her symptoms are limited to a cold, but given the sovereign’s age, 95, there is some concern around her and she is under very close medical supervision. For the moment, however, there is no need for hospitalization. Indeed, it is announced that despite the positivity to Covid, the sovereign will respect the lighter commitments in Windsor following the health indications of isolation. The announcement of the queen’s positivity was given directly by Clarence House through a tweet and immediately the first wishes from the whole world of “a speedy recovery” arrived at Buckingham Palace. However, the sovereign underwent three vaccinations. The first in January 2021, the second in March and the third in October.
The English newspapers
British newspapers (the first was the Sun of which we publish the cover) have naturally immediately changed their home pages dedicating the whole page to the news. The layout of the Times who dedicated the shoulder of the cover to the worrying news. While also the online edition of the Mirror dedicated the cover to this news.
Seventy years on the British throne, the Platinum Jubilee
Just this year, Queen Elizabeth celebrated an anniversary (with a private ceremony in Sandringham) which marked a record: the Platinum Jubilee, the 70-year reign that began precisely on February 6, 1952 when his father, King George VI, was succeeded by the then 25-year-old eldest daughter. Never anyone like her before. And on the occasion of the anniversary he announced his will that Camilla, the wife of the Prince Charles, would take on the role of queen consort. However, it was the first anniversary for the queen without her consort Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who had been alongside Elizabeth for 73 years who passed away last year. On April 21, the queen will turn 96.
The last institutional meeting
Just last week the Queen met the incoming Secretary General of Defense Services, Eldon Millar, and his predecessor, Rear Admiral James Macleod at Windsor Castle. When asked about her health, the smiling queen, who wore a floral dress and moved with a walking stick, pointing to her left leg and foot, replied: “Well, as you can see, I can’t move.” Covid is the latest in a string of health problems for the queen, but she was said to be feeling “much better” after a few rough months late last year. She was forced to spend the night in hospital in October after receiving treatment for a “down” that remained unexplained after the series of tests she underwent. The Queen was out on public duties Saturday, on the eve of her record-breaking platinum jubilee, meeting with charities at Sandringham House – her first major public appearance in more than three months. Doctors ordered her to take a rest after completing a relentless schedule of 19 commitments over as many days.
Carlo and Camilla have concluded the isolation phase
Prince Charles, on the other hand, has just finished his period of isolation. Elisabetta’s son contracted Covid twice, the first in March 2020. But he still overcame both infections well.
