Today is the story of Trumpeta Mexican gray wolf female who gave birth to her first litter.
The wolf was born at the Wolf Conservation Center in New York and is part of a recovery plan for the endangered Mexican gray wolves. Trumpet has always been special.
She is an only child, which is very strange for a wolf. This is what she explained Read Howellthe executive director of the organization.
Litters are usually 4 to 6, so it was a very strange thing. Growing up, the only ones she knew were her mother and her father. And because she had no siblings, they became her play friends as well. And she was a rather exhausting puppy to raise.
Trumpet didn’t get to watch his mom raise more litters and learn how to parent. Fortunately though, that hasn’t stopped her from create his own family.
In 2018, at the age of 2, she was introduced to a wild Mexican gray wolf from New Mexico named Lighthawk. During the breeding season, Trumpet became pregnant.
The director went on to explain:
When they become parents, they become the Alpha. It really has nothing to do with personality or anything like that. It is just like in our families, then the parents are in charge of where we should live, when we should go hunting or what we should do within the family.
The she-wolf gave birth three puppies and proved to be a loving and caring mom. After her birth, volunteers posted a video on social networks and it went viral around the world. Here it is:
A webcam installed in the den filmed what Trumpet did during the night for his pups. He nursed them, cleaned them and pampered them very carefully. Whenever they woke up whimpering, she hugged them and made sure to make them fall asleep.
Tender moments that touched the hearts of all those who found themselves watching the video.
It has shown us that the love between a mother and her children goes beyond our species. A tender moment when what is considered a ferocious Mexican gray wolf hugs her adorable pups. There are those moments that no one ever gets to see, that’s why they are so special.
The following year her parents had another litter. This time, however, Trumpet named his daughter Babs as a babysitter!
It is very common for adult wolves to find a one-year-old pup to help them care for their new offspring.
