“Alcarràs”, by the filmmaker Carla Simón, portrays the struggle of a family of Catalan peach trees that exposes the struggles of small farmers, the desolation before what will be their last harvest and the love of the land. This film performed by non-professional actors has been the favorite at the German festival.
The jury of the Berlin International Film Festival, headed by the Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan, valued in the film the tenderness that Simón gave to his characters, played by non-professional actors.
Carla Simón dedicated her award to all the small farmers who fight for survival. Simón returned to the Berlinale after having won the award for best debut film in 2017 with the work “Estiu 1993”.
The name of the film refers to the city of the same name where his cousins and uncles reside, a town of nine thousand inhabitants to the west of Lleida, who live, fundamentally, from growing fruit trees.
Congratulations to all winners! We’re so excited to finally see this year’s winners with their well-deserved awards. “Alcarràs” by Carla Simón and produced by María Zamora, Stefan Schmitz, Tono Folguera and Sergi Moreno took home the Golden Bear for Best Film.
