Japan’s aging society is forcing it to innovate in unusual ways. Fifteen years ago, the western city of Hōki, where almost half of the residents are over 65, began using recycled adult diapers to heat public toilets and lower energy bills. The project was a huge success and now the idea of turning diapers into fuel pellets has spread to other parts of Japan. Report our correspondents.
