The outbreak of the pandemic COVID-19, which took place in the first months of 2020, also had strong repercussions on the drafting of the Formula 1 calendar, which in that year took extraordinary measures to stem the emergency: for the first time in history, in fact, Italy hosted three GPs in the space of a single season, with the traditional appointment in Monza which was accompanied by the return of Imola and the presence of Mugello, which officially entered the Circus for the first and only time in history. Today, with the simultaneous improvement of the situation at the international level, the Beautiful country is preparing for the 2022 world championship with the two races of Imola and Monza, becoming the only nation, together with the United Statesto welcome two GPs within its borders.
From this year, in fact, the country a Stars and Stripes will continue to host the F1 ad Austinin Texas, but will do so with internal ‘competition’ of the Miami GP, which will make its official debut in the Circus. A double date which satisfies the wishes of an American like Mario Andrettiwho believes that the USA are well equippedat the organizational level, to host two tests in a single season: “I don’t think at all that such a scenario could cause F1 to lose between IndyCar and NASCAR – commented the 1978 world champion in an interview with planetf1.com – however large this country is, the United States could easily host two events. We have a very underrated fanbase for Formula 1, and I think it has been revived a lot by the Netflix series ‘Drive To Survive’, which has contributed a lot to knowledge for a younger audience. Consequently, I think two races here are justified. However, I consider a third event – how could it be in the future Las Vegas – is a question mark. Two are already enough, also because Miami is making large investments, almost as if to reaffirm that the near future of F1 will be there ”.
However, in the history of Formula 1, the United States already had the opportunity to host more than two GPs in the course of a single season: this happened in 1982, the year in which the US-East and US-West GP appointments are held (respectively in Detroit and Long Beach). Added to this was the Las Vegas GP, in its latest edition on the circuit created in the Caesars Palace hotel parking lot.
