US Senator James Lankford submitted to the Senate a bill on the responsibility of Belarus for the aggression against Ukraine. This was announced on Saturday, February 12, in a press release on site politics.
“Senator James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) introduced the Belarus Responsibility for Aggression Act to deter Belarus from allowing Russia to use its territory to invade Ukraine,” the politician’s website says.
The bill includes the imposition of sanctions on Belarus or another country that supports “Russia’s ongoing unprovoked aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
Sanctions will be announced if Belarus participates in the invasion jointly with Russia, provides Moscow with any material, tactical or other assistance, deploys Russian troops taking part in the invasion, works with intelligence during an attack on Ukraine, acquires or transfers lethal weapons used in the invasion .
“Belarus lets thousands of Russian servicemen into its country, to the border with Ukraine. The US should make it clear that any country that supports Russia’s attempts to invade Ukraine will face tough economic and diplomatic sanctions,” Lankford said.
In his words, “It’s easier to stop a war that hasn’t started than to try to end it in the process.”
Earlier, on February 10, Russia and Belarus began joint exercises “Allied Resolve – 2022” to test the response forces of the Union State. The maneuvers are taking place at combined-arms training grounds in Belarus. The exercises are arranged for the qualitative development of the tasks “to suppress and repel external aggression in the course of a defensive operation, as well as countering terrorism and protecting the interests of the Union State.”
On February 3, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said that one of the goals of the joint exercises between Russia and Belarus is the need to strengthen the border with Ukraine. He also clarified that Minsk is ready to create new combat training centers with Moscow to master the latest weapons. According to the President of Belarus, the country “again, it is critically important to master them and be able to use them.”
