After nearly fifty years in the Japanese animation industry, the studio SUNRISE – known all over the world for being the birthplace of the saga of Mobile Suit Gundambut also for Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, Tiger & Bunny, Code Geass And LoveLive! – it will undergo a restructuring during this year, changing its name, company logo and not only.
From the next April 1, 2022, in correspondence with the start of the group’s renewal process BANDAI NAMCO we have already told you about previously, Sunrise will lose its iconic and historic nameassuming the nomenclature of BANDAI NAMCO Filmworks. Together with the other companies belonging to the group, Sunrise will use the same logo that you can see below (and which differs from the one shown above for the color, red instead of magenta).
The entire studio will be moved to the new location called “White Base” in honour of Gundam, and for the first time the entire animated production will be brought together under one roof. All the collateral studies at Sunrise, like BANDAI NAMCO Pictures And Sunrise Beyondwill join under the name of BANDAI NAMCO Filmworks along with the main studio. Their transfer to Ogikubo, in the Suginami district of Tokyo, has already started last October. Also Sunrise Musica subsidiary of the firm, will be moved to the same building in June 2022, but will be merged with BANDAI NAMCO Live Creative and will become BANDAI NAMCO Music Live the same April 1st.
What is currently called Sunrise will be part of the division BANDAI NAMCO Rights Marketing by BI went to NAMCO Artseffectively becoming the audiovisual division of the group BANDAI NAMCO Holdings. The “Sunrise” brand may continue to exist in some way after the date of April 1st, but the entire company and all its assets will be part of the new maxi-studio. The current president of Sunrise, Makoto Asanumawill retain his same role within BANDAI NAMCO Filmworks, and the president of BANDAI NAMCO Arts Satoshi Kono he will become vice president of the company. Yoshitaka Taocurrent president of BANDAI NAMCO Rights Marketing, will become the managing director of the new firm.
Finally, a spokesperson for Sunrise stated regarding this change: “Sunrise’s individuality, which we have honed over the past forty years, will continue to grow as one of our key brands. However, our intent is also to create a new and distinctive identity with a new nuance. “
It is not yet clear, therefore, if the name Sunrise will be abandoned altogether or if it will be used to identify a certain production line, for example the Gundam franchise, which gave the studio the iconic intro with the green Haro of Amuro.
