After allegations of racism
:
This is the new name of the Washington Football Team
Washington 18 months ago, the Washington football team dropped the Redskins name. Now the NFL location from the US capital has a new name.
After the second name change in less than two years, the Washington-based NFL team will compete with the name “Commanders” starting next season. The franchise announced on Wednesday. The term comes from the military language, a capital “W” in a slightly modified form is used as the logo, as was the case recently.
“It’s a name that carries the weight and meaning befitting a 90-year-old franchise,” said team president Jason Wright. Under pressure from society and sponsors, the club from the US capital dropped the long-controversial name “Redskins” in July 2020 after eight decades. The neutral term “football team” was created for the transitional period.
Wright announced the name change in a lengthy letter on the website of the traditional NFL franchise on Tuesday. Wright explained that the naming “Wolves” or “RedWolves” favored by many fans was difficult for licensing reasons. This is another reason why Commanders was chosen.
The former Cleveland Indians from Major League Baseball (MLB) announced their renaming to the Guardians in 2021 after more than 100 years. Indigenous organizations and other critics had branded the previous name as racist. Because of the great criticism, the club had previously abolished its mascot “Chief Wahoo”, an Indian caricature.
