Scientists from Russia and France, during a round table held on Tuesday, February 1, at the Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency, called prevention the main strategy for combating COVID-19.
“The normal reaction of a person and society is to prevent the disease, the spread of the pathogen, to stop the infection. There are many among us for whom even the so-called mild course can be a disaster, ”said the director of the Research Institute of Influenza. A.A. Smorodintseva Dmitry Lioznov.
Experts agreed that vaccination remains a key component of a layered approach to protecting against coronavirus.
“The immune response of vaccinated or previously ill with COVID-19 can prevent the development of a severe course of infection. Mostly unvaccinated people get into hospitals, the maximum mortality rates are recorded in this group, ”explained Lioznov.
However, Dr. Jean-Francois Rossi, professor at the University of Montpellier and the Cancer Institute of St. Ekaterina noted that the maintenance of immune protection after vaccination may depend on the age and immune status of a person. This, in turn, led the researchers to the conclusion that it is necessary to further strengthen the immune system and prepare it for an adequate immune response to the virus.
The participants of the round table, among other things, discussed the positive effect of azoximer bromide (the active ingredient of the Russian drug Polyoxidonium) on immunity. It was used as a means of preventing COVID-19 during five months of 2020 by 913 health workers in the “red zones”. During this time, among those who took azoximer bromide, 13.1% had ARVI, and 2.4% had COVID-19. For comparison, among health workers who did not use the substance, 57.3% had viral diseases, and 26.2% had coronavirus. These studies were presented by Mikhail Kostinov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Modern Vaccination Technologies, 1st Moscow State Medical University. THEM. Sechenov.
Also, azoximer bromide (“Polyoxidonium”) showed preventive efficacy in a study conducted by the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov. Doctors from the “red zone” also took part in it. The proportion of patients with coronavirus in the main group, which included 41 health workers, was 3%, while in the comparison group, which included 37 people, 16% of participants fell ill.
A large-scale vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Citizens can get vaccinated for free. Six vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, EpiVacCorona-N, and the Sputnik M vaccine for adolescents.
