Cooking & EatingWhat should we eat today? That question no longer has to be so complicated, promise the makers of a new app, which has recently been available for the Dutch market.
They actually made the app for their own use, because they themselves were sometimes uninspired and at the same time had to take housemates or children into account. Angelo Lebon (26), Bert Beeckman (31) and Louis Scheers (26) are three Belgian colleagues in the IT sector who developed the app Picky.
At work, the men from Ghent also regularly sighed that they had no idea what the pot would buy next, says Angelo Lebon. And then it became pasta with pesto again, he recently told The last news. ,,Sometimes I had an idea, but I couldn’t convince my partner of it. After a busy working day you rarely feel like long negotiations: so back to the snack bar. When it dawned on us that this frustration was not just at our desk, we started thinking about how it could be done differently.”
Recipes from Dutch food bloggers
You use the app like Tinder, but instead of looking for an interesting love candidate, you look for recipes. No more stacks of cookbooks needed, according to the makers. The app shows dishes and you swipes simply to the left (no match) or to the right (sounds good). You can invite your lover, friends or roommates to join swipe. If there is a match, you can save or schedule the recipe. The app contains 800 recipes from chefs and food bloggers. The number is still growing, the makers report. With the ‘Dinner party’ functionality you can also put together a festive menu together.
The app is a success in Belgium. After three months, the app has 30,000 monthly active users. In December, the makers already counted 5 million swipes from users. With an investment of 200,000 euros from a Belgian investment fund, the makers can now also introduce the app in the Netherlands. This means that users of the free app can find recipes from Eeft Kookt Zo, Food from ClaudNine, Delizabeth, Simone’s Kitchen and The Lemon Kitchen.
The app will continue to provide better suggestions. For example, if you often choose pasta, the app will learn that. Popular ingredients are also reflected in your own range. If dishes are very popular, the app will also process this in the offer. You can also search by ingredients. If you still have a zucchini in the fridge, you can search for meals with that vegetable in it. With a thumbs up you can indicate whether you liked the recipe.
The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
