The most holy Recumbent Christ and Our Lady of Light in her Solitude are the protagonists of the image.
In the absence of knowing if the situation of the pandemic will allow processions to take to the streets after two blank years, Murcia’s Holy Week presented its poster for 2022 this Saturday.
The images of the most holy Recumbent Christ and Our Lady of Light in her Solitude are the protagonists of the image, a work by the ciezano painter Antonio José Villa Vázquez.
The work represents the cults of the Yacente brotherhood, with both holders in the center of the Church of San Juan de Dios, headquarters of the brotherhood, with the veiled Yacente Christ, thus displaying the artist of his technique and referencing one of his main pictorial projects, the Quitate el veil collection. The Christ is at the feet of the Virgin, dressed in white, as is customary in her cults, thus symbolizing the Light, her dedication, and the hope of reliving a new Holy Week.
Both images, absolute protagonists of the piece, are bordered by different allegorical symbols such as the Sun and the Moon, the Holy Spirit and God the Father, represented in the rosary that carries the Marian image. As a framework for this composition we find outlined the church of San Juan de Dios, with a small license from the painter. Instead of seeing the silhouette of Santa María de Gracia y Buen Suceso, the image that normally presides over the temple’s altarpiece, we find the silhouette of a Virgin with Child and Sceptre, the Blessed Virgin of Good Success Crowned, Patron Saint of Cieza, alluding to the origin of the artist.
