Dutchman Pieters crashes during a road exercise in Spain.
Track cycling A Dutchman who won the Madison World Championships in 2019, 2020 and 2021 Amy Pieters has been plunged into a coma, the country’s cycling association KNWU as well as the news agency Reuters reported on Christmas Eve.
Pieters, 30, was seriously injured on Thursday afternoon in a road rehearsal in the middle of a track cycling national team camp. The accident happened near the town of Calpi in Spain.
Pieters, who was flown to an Alicante hospital in a rescue helicopter, was amputated on Thursday night to equalize the pressure in his brain. After surgery, Pieters was caught in a coma for at least the next few days.
According to the cycling association, doctors can only assess the severity of Pieters’ injuries after he has been resurrected from a coma.
Pieters and his partner Kirsten Wild were among the biggest medal favorites of women in Madison at the Tokyo Olympics, but the pair finished fourth in the race.
