Rising gas and electricity prices threaten Britain’s “national crisis”; the kingdom’s energy companies have already asked the government to take appropriate action. The newspaper reports about it on December 24 Financial Times…
The heads of companies EDF, Good Energy and Energy UK asked the Cabinet of Ministers of the country to resolve the situation with the increase in gas prices after another record.
“This is a national crisis. Wholesale gas and electricity prices have risen to unprecedented levels in the past three weeks, creating an extremely challenging operating environment for every business in the industry, ”said Good Energy CEO Nigel Pocklington.
Worsening conditions will cause his company’s annual profit to drop by an additional £ 3 million, he said.
In addition, experts linked the crisis in Britain to a shortage of Russian gas supplies to Europe.
“Gas prices have jumped sharply in Europe: over the past two weeks, prices have risen by more than 70% due to cold weather, nuclear shutdowns in France and reduced flows from the Russian supplier Gazprom,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed interlocutor.
On December 24, Stanislav Mitrakhovich, an expert at the National Energy Security Fund and the Financial University under the Russian government, said that Europe would not do without Russian gas and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, despite the decline in prices on the gas futures or spot market.
He pointed out that Europe needs cooperation with Russia, since liquefied natural gas accounts for 10% there, the rest is pipeline supplies and extraction of blue fuel.
On December 19, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Russia was fulfilling its obligations to supply gas to Europe, but noted that prices for this energy carrier continued to rise. He added that, despite Moscow’s fulfillment of its obligations, it does not send additional volumes of gas as it could, which contributes to higher prices.
At the same time, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stressed on December 8 that Europe should avoid dependence on Russian gas. According to her, “if Russia gets its way, Europe will increasingly hang on the hook of its gas.”
